Deputy Kyle Pagerly was shot and killed while serving a warrant as part of a fugitive task force at a home on Pine Swamp Road in Albany Township. When task force members arrived at the scene the suspect ran into the woods. Deputy Pagerly a...nd his K9 pursued the suspect. When officers located him he opened fire with an AK-47, striking Deputy Pagerly under the arm in the side of his vest. Other officers returned fire and killed the subject. After Deputy Pagerly was struck, his K9 ,"Jynx", tried to pull Kyle to safety by dragging him out of the line of fire. Investigation revealed that the suspect had written a suicide note two days earlier and it is believed that he shot Deputy Pagerly in his attempt to commit suicide-by-cop. Deputy Pagerly was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. Deputy Pagerly was a U.S. Army veteran and had served with the Berks County Sheriff's Department for five years. He also served with the Spring Township Fire Department and at the time of the incident was deputized as a special deputy with the U.S. Marshal's fugitive task force. He is survived by his wife, daughter and parents. The mission of the American Red Cross is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Volunteers make up more than 95% of the Red Cross workforce and we could not accomplish our work without them. I know that I speak for us all when I say that there would be no charitable agencies anywhere without dedicated volunteers. A study of youth development indicates that youth volunteers are twice as likely to get better grades in school, 25% more likely to positively contribute to their family and community and twice as likely to continue their volunteer efforts as adults. Through volunteer initiatives, youth adopt mentors who lead by example, serve as a source of guidance and inspire young adults to achieve their goals with confidence. This is why the American Red Cross is excited host the 1st Annual Youth Heroes Awards Breakfast in Statesboro at Georgia Southern University on Friday, March 7th and the 2nd Annual Youth Heroes Awards Breakfast at Savannah State University on Friday, April 11th. During the awards breakfast, we will also honor two local community leaders, Chris Yaughn from Fostering Bulloch at the Statesboro event and Cathy Hill, Vice President of Georgia Power Coastal Georgia Region in Savannah. Corporate, Individual, Table Sponsorships and Donations are available for both events. Please consider supporting the Youth Heroes Breakfast today!
