William is an energetic, third-grader who attends Unity Grove Elementary School in Locust Grove, Georgia. He is nine years old and enjoys playing video-games, reading adventure novels, playing with Lego toys and going on vacations (he calls his "adventures"). He is a University of Georgia Bulldogs football fan. He absolutely adores animals of all kinds. Like many other boys, he loves Star Wars movies and can talk about superheros
for hours. Unlike many other boys, he was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy when he was nine-months old. He never walked, crawled, or rolled over on his own. He relies on others for all his basic needs like eating, dressing, being put in his wheelchair, going to the bathroom, brushing his teeth and even turning over during the night. He uses a machine to help him cough and another to help him breathe at night. He needs help positioning things so he can read, talk on the telephone, play with toys or play video games. If he drops something, he has to wait until he can ask someone to pick it up. If he wants to go out a door, even a handicap accessible one, he has to wait for someone to open it for him. Sometimes he even has to ask others to pick up his head when he loses head control or to pick up his arm so he can reach his electric wheel-chair's joystick to drive.
However, the most amazing thing about William is that he doesn't let his mobility "disable" him. Once, because he was driving his wheelchair someone asked him, "What's wrong with you?" He quickly and honestly replied, "Nothing, why?" He, and everyone who knows him, truly believes that. He is often heard telling people, "I am just like any other kid!" He is, and his bright spirit and can-do attitude inspires everyone who knows him.
